Absolute Beginners Singing Course

*Please note, registration for the current course is now closed as it started on 20th October. We will advertise details about future Absolute Beginners Courses when these are scheduled. Please contact us if you would like to attend a course, so we can keep you up to date with our plans.

Our Absolute Beginners Singing Course is for you if:

  • You've always wanted to learn to sing but don't know where to start
  • You've not joined a choir or singing group before because you worried about not being able to keep up
  • You want to learn how to make your voice stronger
  • You want to learn how to pitch notes better
  • You are looking to learn in a supportive environment

Our current Absolute Beginners Singing Course is running on Tuesday evenings (7.00 - 8.00pm) from Tuesday 20th October to Tuesday 15th December 2020 (we will be running two classes together on the final evening).

The course takes the form of ten 1-hour classes. We are using the Zoom platform for our online classes, so you will be able to interact with us and ask questions as we go along. This also enables us to work at a pace that suits everyone. If you are put off by the idea of singing in front of other people, this is the ideal opportunity to work on and develop your voice without others listening to you.

We have been running weekly singing classes for women, and a regular series of workshops covering a range of techniques, since early 2016. The ladies who attend our classes have performed at a variety of charitable events over the last few years, to great acclaim. In addition to our highly successful singing classes we are running this 10-week Absolute Beginners Course, for women, covering the basic techniques to get you started on a lifetime of happy music-making!

We've put together a little video for you, of excerpts from a few of our performances:

If you've never really sung before but always wanted to, this is your opportunity to learn.

"From the first time, I joined the group, the teachers and the other members were very friendly. From the first session I felt very welcomed and I've never felt uncomfortable or embarrassed. The teachers always take care of me and the other members and they have been giving me helpful advice on how to protect and improve my voice. Since I started the sessions I have seen significant improvement in my voice and I have understood the mechanisms behind singing. Finally, our singing group welcomes women of different age and cultural groups and honours individuality by allowing members to be themselves always in an environment of mutual respect." - Maria

The course will give you the chance to start from the very basics of singing. Over the 10 weeks you will learn about:

We will also learn some songs along the way, putting what we have been working on into practice.

Karen and Sheena performing

We are Karen and Sheena from Dynamic Meladies. We have sung, together and separately, for many years and Dynamic Meladies has grown from our love of music and the joy of singing and sharing songs with others. We want to encourage women to develop confidence in themselves and their voices. We have created Dynamic Meladies to provide a safe space for women to enjoy singing and learning together. In addition to our weekly Singing Sessions, and regular Workshops, we have also developed a range of online resources to help women to get the most out of their voices and enjoy singing!

FAQs

Q: Do I need to be able to read music?

A: No, we teach all of the songs and exercises by ear, so you don’t have to be able to read music to take part in the class.

Q: I’m not great with technology, what if I can’t understand Zoom?

A: We will send you instructions for setting up and using Zoom, on various devices, in advance of the starting date for the course. If you experience any problems please let us know and we will do our best to guide you through the process.

Q: What if I’m not confident enough to sing in front of other people?

A: Don’t worry, owing to the time lag on the Internet (and on Zoom) your audio will be muted when you sing. Although you can hear us, no-one will be able to hear you. You can unmute yourself to chat to us and ask questions as we go along.

Q: What if I can’t keep up?

A: Our classes are very relaxed and we will go at a pace that suits everyone.

If you have any questions about the course please feel free to contact us.

"My experience of the online group has been very rewarding. The teaching is superb and everything is explained clearly – we are fortunate to have two really skilled and encouraging teachers who provide plenty of follow up resources too. It is a safe and supportive environment and it is enlivening. I highly recommend this online singing group if you want to learn, be stimulated and have some fun in a safe and nurturing context." - Natasha
